Masters of Horror: Pick Me Up

Two seasons. Twenty-six episodes total written by some of the best horror screenplay writers, or so the show says. Its a great concept and as a horror fanatic it seemed like the perfect series for me. I’ve seen it before, but it had been a few years, so when I found it on hulu I thought that I might as well watch it from the very beginning. The link is here. I reviewed each episodes for your enjoyment.

Masters of Horror is a series of one hour long stories that does not have a consecutive plot. If you are wondering how that’s possible, well there’s this cult classic from the 1960’s that also had been remastered when I was a child called The Outer Limits. Basically for one hour every week you get a scary or strange storytelling.

Season One Part Eleven

Pick Me Up

Episode eleven is “Pick Me Up” and it is about two urban legends. When an old bus breaks down the people are stranded until a friendly truck driver stops by. Two of the passengers get on and they head up to the trading post. The rest stay behind as a hitchhiker shows up and almost immediately begins killing everyone. One girl runs off and the killer chases her and eventually catches her. The hitchhiker sees Wheeler kill a man and Wheeler leaves the hitchhiker’s victim where she is to die.

The girl who left earlier arrives at the motel and asks for a room. The hitchhiker bums another ride towards the motel that the girl is at. Wheeler the friendly truck driver searches for more victims, but finds the hitchhiker’s victim. Meanwhile in the motel the hitchhiker is torturing the punk’s girlfriend. Wheeler seems interested in the hitchhiker, like he wants to go up against him to see who is better. So from the girl’s motel room it sounds like the hitchhiker and the chick are getting it on, but they clearly are not. Dramatic irony.

So the girl took a shower in her earrings. She was wearing earrings in the shower! What in the world? Who wears dangling earrings in the shower? She meets the hitchhiker by the drink machine and the truck driver shows up. A really creepy conversation later and the hitchhiker starts torturing the girl through the window. TD says that he’s ashamed of the girl for not being original in her pillow body. TD scares the girl—and made me jump—and convinces her to ride in his truck. Meanwhile the hitchhiker is screaming at the TD because he thinks he took his prey already. The TD uses the girl as bait to get the hitchhiker.

The TD and the hitchhiker start talking like old friends with the TD suggesting that he knows what the hitchhiker is. The trucker and the hitchhiker shove guns into the girl’s face, but they get into an accident that throws the two killers from the truck. Everyone wakes up and the two predators start fighting over the girl. Every girl wants two guys fighting over her right? Not if they are going to kill her. They pass out and they end up in an emergency vehicle, but it is owned by two other psychopaths.

This episode was really unpredictable until the men encounter the psychos. That was a little predictable because they are out in the middle of nowhere. Psychos are everywhere there.

Episode eleven gets 4 out of 5 stars.
